Moreton Island Activities


There are a few freshwater lakes on Moreton Island with crystal clear sapphire run and white sand brand it the work on location for a swim to cool off or to a moment ago sit back, relax and have the composure of this untouched paradise.

Walking Trails

If you don't have a vehicle you can still explore Moreton Island. Walking is a great way of discovering the Island. The vast array of birdlife will sing to you while you walk. There are plenty of beautiful walking tracks around the island.

• The Desert-Tangalooma scenic walk is a 4km loop
• Mt Tempest is 1.5km return
• Rous Track is 18km return
• Telegraph Track is 16km return
• Wrecks lookout is 1km return from the Wrecks campground
• Five Hills lookout is 1km return from North Point Rd

Cape Moreton Lighthouse

Cape Moreton Lighthouse is Queensland's oldest operational lighthouse. The lighthouse was erected by tradesmen, assisted by 35 trusted civil prisoners. Its construction is of sandstone blocks quarried on the Island.

The Cape Moreton light was first lit on 14 Feb 1857. It is Queensland's first lighthouse.

Ancient Shell Middens

Ancient Shell Middens at Spitfire Creek are a reminder of the Aboriginal people, the Ngugi tribe, who inhabited Moreton many years before European settlement. Some of the Shell Middens are dated more than 1490 years.

Old Military Emplacements

The remains of the old military emplacements and fortifications can still be seen at Cowan Cowan and Rous Battery, reminders of the defence effort during World War II. Cowan Cowan was established as a military camp in 1938, housing as many as 900 soldiers during the war.
